I love this song; both the music and the lyrics. You can hear the spirit of Neil Peart speaking through these wonderful words. Brandon's material draws on numerous influences and his own perspectives and unique abilities. So whilst the rich Rush influence is apparent, this is in no way a copy. Brandon has his own superb style and gentle, strong presence.

I don't need name brand clothes.
Or a fancy new car.
I could live without stage and lights.
I don't need to be a star.
There's something else that moves me.
It's enough, enough, for me.
It's enough, enough for you.
Chorus:
Why can't we stop pretending that all these things will make it right.
And why can't we allow ourselves to be everything we already are.
And someday we'll see that love's enough for you and me.
So why can't we just be ourselves.
Be ourselves. Be ourselves.
There she is in the mirror.
All she hears is the lies.
Helplessly she clings to hope.
As her broken dreams pour out her eyes.
There should be something else that moves her.
It's enough, enough, for her.
It's enough, enough for you.
(Chorus)
He stares through the store window.
All he needs is what he wants.
Oh, the way it makes him feel inside.
Now, everyone will want what he's got.
There should be something else that moves him.
It's enough, enough, for him.
It's enough, enough for you.
(Chorus)
Something else is love. Love is something else.

Gabriel Kahane is often compared to Sufjan Stevens and Rufus Wainwright (both of whom he’s collaborated with in the past). It’s a lot to live up to, but to that already high bar I’ll add Ben Folds and Randy Newman, if only for Kahane’s similar sense of musical theatre, playful storytelling and ability to set … Continue reading Album of the Week: Where are the Arms → Bandcamp Album of the Day Dec 19, 2011
